My first dip into the publication pool occurred in 2004 as a non-fiction writer. Devotionals, short articles, and contributions to anthologies followed in rapid succession. This soon gave way to a series of rejections. What??? My research yielded an answer: I needed to use some fiction techniques like dialogue, questions, and storytelling to catch the editors’ and readers’ attention.

As my acceptance rate increased, the thought of writing a book rolled around my mind. I shared the idea with my husband, and we prayed the Lord would direct me.

Around Christmas, my husband had a job near Gettysburg. Our supplier suggested I go along to see the seasonal decorations. As we stood in the historic town square, the combination of old and new melded together. I heard in my spirit the voices of the forefathers as fading echoes.

I shared the experience with my husband. When we arrived home, all efforts to write a poem, non-fiction article, or devotional failed to capture the essence of that moment. I tucked it away, and we sought the Lord for an answer.

On a steamy August day in 2005, we were discussing “the Gettysburg experience,” when my husband made a surprising declaration. “That’s it! That’s your book, and you’ll call it Ghosts of the Past and write it in four months.”

I was sure he’d lost his mind. The more I mulled over his words, the stronger they captivated me. Soon after, I sat down at the computer and started typing. In exactly four months, I had a 55,000-word manuscript.

the-moses-conspiracyThe fairytale version would be immediate publication, but it took eight years to bring the manuscript to publishable quality. In early 2006, my husband was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My work on the book, now called The Moses Conspiracy, came to a grinding halt as I cared for him.

After he passed away, the last thing I wanted to do was write. As the grief abated, I remembered how much he encouraged me and jumped back into the project. The Moses Conspiracy is dedicated to his memory.

The journey to publication is often long, requiring patience and persistence. Two more books followed the first one, as well as a Christmas novella. My fifth book is currently in the works.

If you’re walking down this road, don’t get discouraged. Learn your craft and produce a quality story for your readers. Someday, I’ll be reading about your debut novel. Happy writing!

archaeology, Crevice, Dutchman's gold, Janice Boekhoff, mystery, Romance, suspense, thriller, treasure hunters

July 8th’s suspense post showcased the Christian romantic thriller novel, Crevice, by suspense author, Janice Boekhoff.

And now, here’s the story behind the story.

JaniceSince childhood, I’ve been hooked on Indiana Jones movies. I would binge watch them with my family on the weekends. For many years, I wanted to be an archaeologist myself. But that dream fell away when I realized most archaeologists classify clay pot shards for a living. Even so, I’ve never lost my love of history and the desire for a great treasure hunt.

A few years ago, I was watching a TV show that had a segment on the Lost Dutchman gold mine located somewhere in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. The myriad of legends reached out with their tantalizing clues and drew me in. Which ones were real? Which were fantasy?

Only Jacob Waltz—the Dutchman—knew for sure, and he was long dead.

For over a century, treasure hunters have tried to find the mine by understanding the Dutchman himself. Not much is known about Jacob Waltz, who wasn’t even Dutch, but German. His early life is shadowed in mystery. But by the 1860s, he had settled into a humble existence as a farmer near the Salt River (modern day Phoenix, AZ), and yet he died with a box of rich gold ore under his bed.

Where did he get access to such wealth, and why didn’t he flaunt it?

In Crevice, I had such fun coming up with a creative explanation for the enigma of Waltz’s life, but the truth remains a mystery. Sadly, theCrevice details of the lonely Dutchman’s life, and whatever mine he might have discovered, died with him in 1891.

The lost mine remains lost.

Even so, Dutch Hunters continue to scour the desert mountains, looking for the treasure. It’s a dangerous obsession. Over two hundred people have died or disappeared while searching. Why do they do it? Because they believe the Dutchman’s gold is still out there, waiting to be discovered.

That kind of obsession (and my own obsession with rocks) inspired me to write a modern day treasure hunt, but Elery Hearst doesn’t care about the gold. She only wants to find her missing brother. And along the way, she finds so much more.

Perhaps, the Dutchman’s gold isn’t all legend. Maybe a rich mine really is out there … waiting. If you happen to stumble across it, feel free to send a few chunks of gold ore my way.

A Silver Medallion – Behind The Story

A Silver Medallion, human trafficking, James R. Callan, mystery, no escape, slavery, suspense, thriller

June 10th’s suspense post showcased the Christian mystery novel, A Silver Medallion, by author James R. Callan.

And now, here’s the story behind the story.

Where did A Silver Medallion come from?

It came from the same place that many of my books originate: a news story.  Several years ago, I read a short piece about a woman held a virtual slave in Los Angeles.  She was not held by chains, but by threats to her family that remained in a foreign country.  She could not quit, escape, or for that matter, even tell authorities about her predicament.  If she did, her family would be harmed.

It seemed impossible that this could happen in the United States.  And I dismissed it. But the story hung around in the back of my mind and eventually I did some research.  I was horrified to find it was widespread. One government report claimed more slaves existed in the U.S. now than in 1860. No chains, but slaves nonetheless.

Again, I put that out of my mind. But it continued to resurface and eventually I knew I had to write about it. But the actual facts were too horrific for me to consider a non-fiction account. So, I decided to write a suspense novel where the protagonist from my first Crystal Moore suspense book discovers a virtual slave.

Crystal learns of a young, single mother, Lucita, who has left two young girls in Mexico with the man who arranged transportation and a job in Dallas for her. She would make “big Yankee dollars” and soon could send for the children. But once she got to the job in Dallas, the real facts were explained to her. She could not leave her position, could not tell anyone about it, could not displease her “owner” or her girls would be killed or sold to drug lords.

Crystal tries to forget she ever heard about Lucita. But her conscience will not let her. She had lost her parents when she was seven. They were dead; nothing could be done. But Lucita is not dead. Something could be done. After sleepless nights and numerous nightmares,  Crystal knows she must try to help Lucita and her girls.

Crystal considers many paths and finally realizes that the mother will never escape, complain, or go to authorities until she knows her two girls are free and safe. To accomplish that, Crystal decides she must go to Mexico and rescue the children.

At this point, I must answer the question, why would unadventurous Crystal go into the jungles of Mexico and challenge a ruthless drug lord.  For me, the answer was simple. It is not about logic, intelligence, or bravery.  It is about emotions, feelings, basic tenets a person holds. For Crystal, it is about helping someone who cannot help herself.

The decision is made easier because Crystal is naive and does not really understand just how dangerous it will be. She thinks that the police will help her. Or the Federales. And if all else fails, at least Crystal will be protected by the U.S. Consulate. All those safety nets evaporate once she is in Mexico.

It is a dangerous, yet interesting adventure,  aided by a mysterious Juan Grande.  If they succeed, mother and children will be free, but Crystal will have two powerful and ruthless men — one in Mexico and one in Texas — who want her dead.

Read A Silver Medallion to follow Crystal’s trek through the jungles of Mexico and see what she is made of and what she is capable of doing.

A Silver Medallion

Young, bright, unadventurous Crystal Moore comes face-to-face with slavery in today’s Dallas, Texas. A woman is held, not by chains, but by threats to her two small children left behind in Mexico. Should she escape, or even tell anybody of her situation, her children will be killed.

Crystal would like to walk away and forget she ever heard this. But her conscience won’t let her. Her parents were killed when she was just seven. She knows the heartache these children suffer. And she can’t sleep without hearing the cries of the two young girls and their mother.

Crystal knows the woman will never try to escape as long as her children are held hostage. Crystal realizes the only way to free her is to go to Mexico and rescue the girls first, for only if they are safe will the mother ever be free.

In the midst of all this, the man who nearly destroyed Crystal emotionally is coming back. This time, he can ruin her career.

Stranded – Behind The Story

amreading, amwriting, Christian Fiction, Don Prichard, inspirational fiction, mystery, Stephanie Prichard, Stranded, suspense reads

April 29th’s suspense post showcased the Christian mystery novel, Stranded by co-authors Don and Stephanie Prichard.  And now, here’s the story behind the story.

StrandedDon and I are often asked what it’s like to write as a husband and wife team (meaning, “and still stay married” HA!) You see, it’s not as if we decided over coffee one morning to write a novel together. Uh, no way.

It was more like oil and water defying odds to become a new substance.

Don, let’s say, is the “oil.” Stranded started off as his baby—a baby born of a man who was not inherently daddy material. First of all, he’s dyslexic, and, well, sad to say, simply can’t write. Secondly, because of that, he rarely indulged in reading as a form of entertainment. He read the Bible and the newspaper. Period. Given those credentials, how in the world could he aspire to be an author? If anyone would have been voted Least Likely to Write a Novel in high school, it would have been Don.

I, the “water,” am just the opposite. I love reading and majored in English/Lit at college, intending a career of writing novels. It wasn’t a passion, however—more of a daydream—and the reality and reward of marriage and motherhood easily replaced it. I forgot all about writing.

Imagine my shock then, when, at the age of 57, Don told me he wanted to write a novel. “Give me a few pointers,” he said. Okay, I admit to snickering behind my hand, but I gave him the basics and off he went, jolly as could be. For the next four years, he wrote, rewrote, and re-rewrote his novel. It got so long he finally divided it into three novels.

Then he invited me to join him as a co-author—by which he meant be his editor, clean up his spelling and grammar. Definitely NOT to rewrite anything. After all, this was his baby, and surgery was not an option. But I fell in love with his story, made a little suggestion here, a little suggestion there, and before long we were reading how-to books together and attending writing conferences. I needed the input as much as Don. Being an English/Lit major, I discovered, did not equal knowing how to write fiction.

Ahhhh, oil and water didn’t just bond—we became one! We are amazed at how perfectly suited we are for each other as co-authors. Don is outstanding at coming up with “story” (he’s an avid movie fan and learned from the cinema), and he now loves it that I perform surgery on “our” baby. I take the draft he’s written and rewrite it, sometimes filling in plot holes, sometimes adding to the story, sometimes deleting (in all cases, talked over with Don first). I research everything to make sure it’s spot on, and he contributes all kinds of fascinating details (especially about survival in Stranded) that make the story all the more interesting.

For this, we credit God and thank Him with full hearts.

As for our marriage, co-authoring has raised our admiration and respect for each other. Having this project in common has given us great delight. We work on the same thing, aim for the same destination, and root for it outcome. There’s no conflict, just wonderful unity.

Okay, once in a while we squabble, but we always end up on the same page, happy with the final decision!

About the Authors

Don Prichard is a Viet Nam veteran who served in the Marine Corps Reserves for Don & Stephanie Pritchardthirty-two years before retiring as a colonel. He is also a career architect, whose specialty in government work includes the design of prisons, courthouses, and military facilities.

Stephanie is an army brat who lived in many countries around the world and loved it. She met her husband at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where she majored in English/Literature. She and Don have lived in Indianapolis, IN, for forty years, where they raised their three children and now enjoy eleven grandchildren. In retirement have turned to co-authoring novels.

The Club – Behind The Story

Christian, Fiction, Karin Kaufman, mystery, neopaganism, new age, spiritual warfare, suspense, The Club, thriller, wicca

This month’s suspense post showcased the supernatural Christian thriller novel, The Club by multi-published Christian author, Karin Kaufman. And as promised, here’s the story behind the story. And it’s just as thrilling as her novel.

When I first planned the Anna Denning Mystery Series, I knew two things for certain: first, the series would be set in a Colorado mountain March 18 posttown, and second, the series’ protagonist would battle spiritual forces in the guise of “harmless” neopagan and new age practices. I live in Colorado and love the mountains—right now I’m blessed to live very close to the foothills—so the mountain setting was a no-brainer. (Besides, my favorite mysteries play out in isolated settings, and there’s nothing quite as isolated as a mountain town!)

The protagonist who confronts neopaganism, wicca, and various new age practices? That aspect of my books come from my past, as a Christian who briefly, a long time ago, dipped her toe into wicca because, well, it seemed so appealing. I know the pitfalls, I know the dangers, and I have empathy for those who get sucked into the neopagan lifestyle. In fact, one of my returning characters, Jazmin Morningstar, is a wiccan, and I love writing about her. When people say God can use anything from your past, believe them!

Still, I didn’t want my mysteries to be nothing more than anti-neopagan polemics. Anna Denning, my main character, isn’t shy about disliking practices that fall under the umbrella of neopaganism—in fact, some readers think she should be a little less outspoken, a little sweeter—but more than anything I want my books to be entertaining. I want them to be escapes—in all the best senses of the word. I want to take readers away to the Colorado mountains, give them a few hours of thrills and chills, and introduce them to characters I hope will become friends.

The Club is the fourth book in the series, and as it opens, Anna Denning has been a widow for three years. In The Witch Tree, the first book in the series, she meets a man (Gene Westfall) and finds—much to her surprise—that she’s drawn to him, and he makes an appearance in the other books in the series too, but I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t go into details! But it’s been fun writing about two characters who take love, marriage, and Christian vows seriously.

Because Anna is a genealogist, The Club (like my other mysteries) features past crimes and misdeeds come to life—or come, finally, to a come-uppance. Payback. The past never really dies, does it? One day there’s a reckoning. In the latest mystery, Anna takes her genealogy skills to a new level, this time working for the local police department. (If you’ve been reading the series, you just knew she had to make that leap, didn’t you?) As a consultant, she finds missing identities, missing relatives of murder victims, and, in The Club, a missing finger. Literally.

I hope readers enjoy this latest book in my series. I loved writing it. I always love returning to Elk Park, my fictional (or is it?) mountain town, and reacquainting myself with the characters who call it home.
